Javier Toledo PhD
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Digital Health Innovation Lab
Dr Javier Q. Toledo-Marín joined the Digital Health Innovation Lab at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and is currently a Mitacs Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UBC. He’s currently designing and building the TrustSphere Research Data Registry, as part of the TrustSphere project. His research aims at bridging the gap between health and AI by designing better annotated ML-ready datasets, as well as reliable machine learning (ML) tools that can increase robustness and performance in intelligent decision-making systems. After completing his PhD in Physics at Instituto de Física, UNAM, México, in 2020 where his research revolved around Statistical Mechanics, Condensed Matter and Computational Physics, he was offered a position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Biocomplexity Institute at the School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering at Indiana University Bloomington IN, where he developed different tools for diagnosis and prognosis in diabetic retinopathy by combining ML with mechanistic modelling. The overarching goal in Javier’s research is to contribute in developing an AI theory that can be used to build trustworthy ML tools in a healthcare environment coupled to mechanistic modelling to generate patient-centered digital twins.
Research Interests: data science, mathematical modelling, deep generative models
